Our Favorite Royal Weddings

Here at Lyra Vega, we’re still recovering from Royal Wedding Fever, and we bet you are, too (or maybe we’re all still catching up from waking up at 4:00 AM to watch it)! I mean, that gorgeous wedding dress and veil, the carriage, the gospel choir singing “Stand by Me” - the whole thing was amazing! This got us thinking about other royal weddings, so today, we want to look at the most elaborate, expensive royal weddings in history!

Grace Kelly was one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, known for her timeless elegance and beauty. This Hollywood royalty gave up acting for actual royalty on April 19, 1956 when she married Monaco’s Prince Rainier.

After a civil service, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier were married in a religious service at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Monaco. The princess wore an elaborate gown made of over 300 yards of antique Brussels lace, plus over 100 yards of silk and taffeta, while her veil was 90 yards of antique lace and seed pearls. The reception consisted of a six-layer wedding cake (depicting the history of Monaco in sugar!), thousands of lilies and white lilacs, and an enormous buffet and champagne for 600 guests!

In 2010, Victoria of Sweden tossed aside tradition and married her fitness coach in a surprising love match, on June 19, 2010. Dressed in an amazing, white satin gown with a train over 16 feet long, Crown Princess Victoria married Wrestling at the Stockholm Cathedral with 1,200 guests in attendance. The ceremony was followed by horse-drawn carriage rides through the city of Stockholm which led to a trip on the antique royal barge which led them to the Palace for their reception.

Featuring fighter jets flying over during the procession through the city, an elaborate wedding banquet for over 600 guests, and an 11-tiered cake, this royal wedding was one of the most elaborate in modern history!

How many of our mothers woke up early to watch Lady Diana Spencer marry Prince Charles on July 29, 1981? With an estimated 750 million viewers around the world, this was one of the most televised weddings in history. And the royal family didn’t let the viewers down in a wedding estimated to cost 48 million dollars (70 million when inflation is factored).

Arriving at St. Paul’s Cathedral in a glass coach wearing a wedding dress made of ivory silk taffeta, lace, and 10,000 hand-sewn pearls and featuring a 25-foot train, Lady Diana Spencer became Princess Diana with 3,500 people in attendance. Continuing the fairy-tale scene, the couple were driven through London in an open carriage, arriving at Buckingham Palace where they started the royal tradition of sharing a kiss on the balcony.

While we love royal weddings, we know that a million-dollar wedding isn’t exactly feasible. Meghan & Harry's celebration was estimated to cost 2.7 million dollars (plus another 40 million for security)! If you don’t have a royal budget, you can still look like a princess (or a queen!) in a high-quality, stylish, but affordable wedding dress from Lyra Vega Bridal. Each of our wedding dresses are hand-made to order, ensuring a great fit at a great price! Schedule your FREE online consultation today!
