Money Monday: How to Save on Your Wedding Invites

Invitations may be the least of your worries when it comes to budget, but they can carve out a significant chunk of your expenses. In 2019, invitations cost a couple an average of $590, which can fluctuate depending on guest count and the quality or design of the invites. Not every bride is willing to go digital with invites, which is understandable. It is free, but may not convey the theme of your wedding as well as you’d like or you may simply love the tradition of invites. If you do plan to go with paper invites, there are a few ways that you can cut costs significantly.

Use Your Wedding Website

In most wedding invitation suites there is an invite, response card, reception info, and other event details. That’s at least four cards in one invitation, which can increase the price of your printing and shipping per invitation. Save some money by trimming the layers of your invitation. Instead of including a full invitation suite in your wedding invites, only include the ceremony invite with a link to your wedding website. That is where you can list all the other details of your wedding and reception, as well as keep track of RSVPs.

Do It Yourself

Be your own printer! You can skip out on the cost of printing by making your invitations yourself. This can be easily done either with an online design tool or a printing kit. You can develop your invites, save the dates, menu cards, programs, etc. This can save you a ton of money in the long run, but just remember you still have to pay shipping costs so try to keep your invites to standard dimensions.

Keep It Light

Printing isn’t the only way to run up your invite costs, postage can also get fairly expensive. If your invites are packaged in oddly shaped envelopes or are too heavy, there will be surcharges added to your overall shipping cost. If you want to avoid these extra costs, choose an invitation that has more standard dimensions. You also want to avoid using square envelopes because they have to be hand-stamped and will cost extra to send as well.
