Money Monday: Live Band or DJ?

We’re bringing it to the dance floor for this week’s Money Monday! If you’ve attended a wedding, then you know that the dance floor is always the heart of the reception, where we see variations of the electric and cha cha slide. But, that brings up the age-old debate, what’s better - a live band or a DJ? This can ultimately boil down to personal preference and the kind of vibe you’re going for at your reception. However, there is no denying that you will save a ton of money by opting for a DJ over a live band. Live bands can cost upwards of $3,400+, whereas DJs cost an average of $1,200. To help make your decision a little easier, we’ve listed a few of the benefits of booking a DJ over a live band, trust us the limited cost isn’t the only upside!

Have Music All Night

No need to plan out an entire reception playlist if you don’t have the time! Always make sure to give your DJ a list of the “must-have” and “don’t play” songs, but once you give them a general style of music you want to be played, they can take the reins. A DJ will plan out a whole playlist for the night, but if you want peace of mind that the chicken dance won’t pop up mid-reception, ask to see the playlist before your wedding day. Bands also typically take breaks or only play for a few hours, so a DJ will keep the party going from dinner to the end of the night.

Create Extra Funds

If you opt for a DJ instead of a live band, you will be saving at least $2,500 on music and entertainment. This would give you some extra funds you can funnel into other aspects of your wedding. Whether you decide to order those fancy linens you originally wanted but couldn’t afford or book a photobooth for some extra entertainment, the money you save on music gives you a cushion for any “must-have” items you encounter during your planning.

Have A Built-In MC

Booking a DJ gives you a built-in MC for all reception activities like the father-daughter dance and last call for the bar. You can give your DJ a plan for when dinner will be served or simply have someone walk up to them, letting them know when to make announcements. Either way, you don’t have to rush around your reception trying to make all events go smoothly. Having a DJ gives you an MC who will not only keep the reception flowing, but can also hype up your guests when it comes to keeping the dance floor packed and moving!
