Money Monday: What You Should Know About Wedding Insurance
With the curveball of a year we’ve had, it’s not surprising that couples would be looking into wedding insurance. All brides worry about what can go wrong on their wedding day but hope that it won’t happen. Wedding insurance can give you peace of mind when it comes to any unforeseen issues that may occur on your big day. This is an additional charge that will affect your budget, as a basic policy can cost anywhere between $155 and $550, so you want to make sure to evaluate your specific situation and what, if any, insurance policy will be necessary to purchase for your wedding. Some of your vendors may already include an insurance policy in their contracts, so you also want to read over all of your agreements to avoid buying insurance you may already have. If you’re trying to decide whether or not you need wedding insurance, here are a few things to keep in mind before making a purchase!
Liability Coverage
Liability insurance will cover any damage to the venue or guests that occurs during the wedding. When choosing a limit, you should consider your guest count, staff, and the value of the venue. If you have a large guest count, for example, 150 people, or are getting married in an expensive, historical venue it may be a good idea to purchase liability insurance. But, also remember that this policy doesn’t cover any personal injury or property for you or your partner.
When to Buy
The sooner, the better! Typically, most insurance plans will need to be purchased at least 15-60 days before the wedding. But, we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible to ensure you are protected early on in your planning process. Just make sure to carefully review any policies and double-check with your venue and other vendors to see if they offer insurance in their packages.
Cancellation or Postponement Coverage
Cancellation or postponement insurance will protect you if you are unable to hold your wedding due to reasons out of your control. This can include bad weather, vendor no-shows, illness, etc. With this policy, you will be reimbursed for any payments you have already made to vendors. You should purchase this insurance if you are having your wedding in a location that has unpredictable weather, but be aware it will cost more than liability insurance because it covers more items.
