Money Monday: 3 Ways to Cut Costs on Wedding Transportation

We’ve all seen those classic wedding movies that always include a shot of the happy couple driving off in their car with a “just married” sign hanging off the back. What they don’t show you is that if the getaway car isn’t your own, you'll spend a few hundred dollars to have that well-known wedding moment. On average, couples will spend about $800 on wedding transportation. Even for couples who don’t want to arrive in style, the most basic form of transportation can add up if you plan to accommodate a large group of people. Whether you feel obligated to pay for your bridal party’s transport or simply want to make things easier for your closest friends and family, there are a few easy ways to save hundreds of dollars on your wedding transportation.

Limit to the Bridal Party

If you’re having a destination wedding or getting married out of town, you may feel obligated to pay for everyone’s transportation. But, that can easily add up to thousands of dollars, depending on how many guests you have invited to your wedding. Instead, limit any paid transportation to your bridal party and provide directions for the rest of your guests. You can also look into a free hotel shuttle service if you are getting married at a resort of some kind.

Plan A Grand Entry or Getaway

When it comes to you and your partner’s transportation, it’s usually best to decide between having a grand entry or a getaway. Renting a car for 5 or 6 hours can waste money, especially if you’re only in the car for small increments of time. Most of your time will be spent at your actual wedding or taking photos. If you pick an entry or getaway you can book a car for that time to cut your costs in half.

Choose A Large Vehicle

If you are paying for your bridal party’s transportation to the wedding, don’t rent multiple small vehicles to get them from point A to point B. It will be significantly cheaper to rent one large vehicle for a few hours that can shuttle all of your bridesmaids and groomsmen. This way you can cut costs and ensure your bridal party will arrive at your ceremony and reception at the same time. No need to worry about anyone showing up late, which is always a plus!
